About the Sire

“River”

He is the foundation dog of James and Michele Layne's Lake Wisconsin Chesapeakes (LWC).

River is the 25th Chesapeake to earn both AKC Master Hunter and AKC Grand Champion titles. He too, is an accomplished waterfowl and upland hunting partner. If it falls from the sky, he will find it.

His exceptional temperament allows him to get along well with other dogs, and people alike. The acclaimed retriever trainer, Bill Hillmann, once described him as perhaps the most balanced Chesapeake he's ever met.

He is a classically built Chesapeake who stands a little over 25" at the withers and weighs in around 87 lbs. He has excellent marking skills and drive, along with the athleticism to cover ground quickly and with ease. In cold, windy conditions and strong currents, like we encounter waterfowling, his courage and horsepower really shine. Whether he's retrieving big Canada geese, snow geese, or chasing down crippled Divers in open water, the size of his heart is always on display. Following the close of our waterfowl seasons, we switch gears to actively chase pheasants and squeeze in a few AKC Dog Shows.

River has qualified for both the Master Amateur Invitational and Master National. Of the 1492 Master National qualifying retrievers in 2023, he is the sole Grand Champion Chesapeake to make the qualifying list. Although he and James train and run hunt tests over the summer months, the fall and winter months are spent hunting waterfowl and upland birds throughout the midwest and Canada.

River is trained, handled and hunted by his amateur owner, James Layne, in southwest Wisconsin.
